vacation cooking

Source: stuff on my cake stand

The beach in August is my New Year. It's when I take a deep breath and reset. I usually have some sort of epiphany about my life while walking the beach, or driving the twisty Route 1 along the shore. I love our sleepy little beach town so much I cry when our time is up and we pack everything into the car and drive away. Every summer I'm sure that I want to move for good. I love Vermont. But I wouldn't mind spending whole summers there, in a house on the beach, baking pies and having bonfires and dinner parties and surfing. When I was a kid my parents would take me and my brother to Ocean City, New Jersey for a few days every summer. I would lay on the sand listening to the waves until I fell asleep, or my mom noticed my fair skin turning red. I would dive under waves until salt water burned my throat. I was fascinated by the local kids, riding their bikes to the beach with no parents, and surfing in wetsuits. I was a freckled, awkward pre-teen who wanted more than anything to be a beach town surfer girl. I fantasized about running away every time we went on vacation. Even more, I just wanted my family to recognize that this was where I truly, obviously belonged, and they should go back to our landlocked upstate NY valley and leave me to find my own way. I still feel this way, only now my goal is to give my kids the beach summers I always longed for. My deepest wish is that they spend as much of their childhoods as possible in the ocean. To that end, we've been staying in this little beach town as long as we can every August for ten years now, renting the same house across the street from the ocean for the past six. By the end of the first week, it always feels like home. I mean, sure, it's the rocky coast of New England, not a tropical beach, or even the Jersey shore. The water is freezing. But the beach is wide and the sand is soft. There's a surf shop and a taco stand down the street. We fall asleep listening to the waves crash 50 feet from our beds. And I happen to think it's badass that my kids are growing up diving, willingly, into the freezing cold Atlantic for two weeks every summer. We always go grocery shopping on the first day, to fill the tiny kitchen. Every year we plan out a few dinners. Nothing fancy, just stuff that's easy to get on the table when everyone's hungry and lightheaded after a day in the waves. Usually I buy as many grillable things as possible and Sam takes charge. But this year something was different. Maybe it was the realization that we had two whole weeks and if I wanted to spend an afternoon making pie it didn't mean we wouldn't get to do something else. So I got to work in that tiny, ancient kitchen and baked. I found that just like everything else, it's better by the ocean.
