Woodland’s newest kitchen goods boutique is more than just a place to get an Emile Henry tagine. On the heels of its soft opening in April, Well-Stocked, located at 412 First St. , is quickly becoming the go-to place for the inspired chef, gift giver, intrigued and seasoned shoppers. “There was just such a positive reaction,” explained Lacey Mares on opening in conjunction with downtown’s Swirl & Slice. I already have repeat customers who come in every week to see what’s new. After seeing the vacant storefront a few months ago, she connected with building owner Ron Caceres to tour the space. Well-Stocked’s concept is not limited to the professional home chef. rather, it’s merchandised is planned in such a way to encourage “every stage of cooking. Kids will be happy to get involved in food preparation with giraffe-handle whisks and spatulas, or the cookie cutter set with different animal shapes that comes with a reusable map to put the creations on native habitats. For the college student, senior, or cooking-for one scenario, the Spanish “Leuke” microwavable line is a hit. “It’s all about one-pot cooking so college students can prepare a whole cooked chicken in 20 minutes, or artichokes in 10 minutes,” Mares explained. “It’s a great way of being able to cook without needing a cooktop or dishwasher. Plus, it’s great to have dinner with leftovers for the next day. It’s microwave, oven and dish safe, plus there are different steam case options depending on the preparer, from bacon to “micro”-baked goods. The person who wants to be “a little more adventurous on their cooking adventure,” may fancy the Nordic Ware Dutch oven, made of cast aluminum at a fraction of the weight and cost. “Plus, it has a Viking on it which is so super cool,” said Mares. Well-Stocked carries an abundance of other specialty items, from copper collections for jam making to Wusthof cutlery, and everything in between. “There’s a little bit of everything for everyone at different price points,” Mares said. Just in time for Father’s Day, Well-Stocked has expanded to include more items of the “gentlemen” variety, under the auspices of Well-Stocked Gentlemen inside the same store front. Think cigars in a wall humidor, tailgating accessories, grooming items and other “innovative gifts that you would normally have to special order,” said Mares. This is just the beginning for Well-Stocked. Mares is working with Chris Dreith at Woodland’s Home Improvement Group to build a cooktop with counter space and full kitchen in the shop. The addition — set to be complete by Thanksgiving — will play host to in-house Friday Date Night classes, Saturday morning children’s classes, Sunday afternoon technique classes and other demonstrations. Plans are in the works to build out the pantry area, which will market items like spices, rubs and olive oil. In the meantime, new retail is constantly being added. A passionate home chef who loves cooking for her two young children and husband, Mares comes from a retail background. She spent seven years managing Z Gallerie during the economic downturn and credits the experience with the skill of thinking outside the box. “It was a time of learning how to be resourceful and build relationships with my clients rather than raising my prices,” she explained. Mares also spent a year at Williams Sonoma, where she had shopped “forever. “I feel like as a boutique I have more flexibility to really bring in what my customers are looking for rather than a brand direction. And I can offer better prices as well,” she said. “Ultimately, (Well-Stocked) combines everything I love: The retail, the cooking, the customers.
